BILL TURNER CUP (BOYS)
Media Release Thursday 25 August 2011
Written by Greg Danvers – Bill Turner Cup Media Manager

The four semi-finalists have been decided for the 2011 Bill Turner Cup to be played in the City of Lake Macquarie at Jack McLaughlin Oval, Edgeworth next month on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7, September.

From 440 junior high school teams the top four will play in two semi-finals on Tuesday 6 September with the winners to play the following afternoon for the coveted Bill Turner Cup.

The Bill Turner Cup, a 15 years and under knockout tournament where teams from as far north as Cairns to North Melbourne’s St Albans, kicked off the FA Cup style competition in the second term of this school year.

Brisbane’s Cavendish Road State High will play Westfields Sports High from Fairfield in Sydney’s inner west in the first semi-final. Patrician Brothers Blacktown will play Marian Catholic College from Griffith in the second semi-final.

Patrician Brothers, the 1994 champions, return after 15 years while Marian, formerly Griffith Catholic, last contested the Finals Series in 2003.

Founding President of Northern NSW Schools Soccer Incorporated Bill Turner is eagerly awaiting the Finals Series.

“The way they, Marian and Patrician Brothers, have come through the competition, causes me to admire them both,” Bill Turner said.

“When I see their results it makes me feel that there is ever increasing talent in the schools. “They want to get to the finals and see themselves with a real chance to win it.”

Last year’s champions Westfields Sports High and Cavendish Road, a semi-finalist in 2010, both return and should provide an entertaining semi-final match.

“Cavendish Road have always been an excellent school … they know they’ve got the talent and they work on that talent,” Bill Turner said.

“They have coaches of tremendous quality and it is not surprising that Cavendish Road appears in the semi finals.

“With Westfields it is interesting, up until their 4-1 quarter final win over The Hills, their results have been very close,” Bill Turner said of the defending champions.

“I’m anticipating that when Cavendish Road plays Westfields they’ll open many eyes because of the standard.”
