Coffs Harbour 22 August, 2017:

Whitebridge High School (City of Lake Macquarie) beat Saint John Paul College (Coffs Harbour) 1 (3) – 1 (2) on penalties at Cex International Sports Stadium, Coffs Harbour today and will now contest the National Final Series of the prestigious Bill Turner Cup.

Whitebridge High scored first, in the 21st minute (of 30) in the first half while St John Paul College equalised in the 39th minute.

Jonny Middleby netted after cleaning up team mate Dylan Newbold’s stinging free-kick that was parried away by St John Paul College (SJPC) ’keeper Joel Mathewson.

After the break both teams applied the blow torch with the tempo rising rapidly. Whitebridge unable to find the net on three occasions before SJPC’s striker Komotee Barney unleashed a screamer in 39th minute to equalise at 1-all.

After 60minutes of regular time the scores were deadlocked at 1-all sending the match to Golden Goal additional time which remained scoreless and the match went to a penalty shoot-out.

Whitebridge prevailed 3-2 on penalties to progress to their fifth Bill Turner School Football National Final Series.

Whitebridge contested the final series in 1979, the first ever Bill Turner Cup, losing 1-0 to Belmont High in the final. Appearing the following year and finished third to Tamworth and Waratah.

Whitebridge again made the final in 1990 losing 2-0 to Epping Boys with their last appearance, fourth place to Illawarra Sports (Champions), Westfields Sports and Brisbane’s Cavendish Road in 2008.
