President’s Message

Bill Turner Cup.

2010 sees the thirty second year of the Northern NSW School Football Association and the Bill Turner Cup. More recently the girls Bill Turner Trophy series became part of the organisation.

Last year’s final saw NSW’s Bossley Park defeat Queensland’s Cavendish Road to win the Cup for the third time. The Final Series received good coverage on SBS television’s “The World Game”.

The website continued to draw praise from players and supporters. Thanks to Lloyd Turner and Troy Roennfeldt for all their efforts in setting up and maintaining the site. We received 6400 visits in the four months it was running last season.

Once again there are a large number of entries in 2010 from Queensland, Northern NSW, ACT, NSW and Victoria. The pilot competition in Western Australia is still in recess.

We are honoured to have the endorsement from Football Federation Australia, along with NSW, Northern NSW, ACT, Queensland and Victoria, as well as from the Newcastle Jets and Brisbane Roar.

We would also like to thank Northern NSW Football and Brisbane Roar for the financial assistance they give to support the competitions.

Our Code of Behaviour appears again in this years handbook and the website. We encourage all participants to print/photocopy the documentation for distribution. There have also been a number of very important administration alterations and rule changes. Please carefully read and check all the rules in the handbook or on the website.

In addition there have been changes in areas to allow for expansion in Victoria and to limit the amount of travelling done by the Victorian and Riverina teams. Please check which area your school is now in and the path you need to follow from the last 32 of the competition.

Personally I would like to commend the efforts of our dedicated Executive. They have worked tirelessly over recent years to keep the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy going strongly, despite having no major sponsor.

Finally we seek your continued moral and financial support this year and we like to invite you to attend, if possible, the Final Series on September 7th and 8th.

Bill Turner Trophy.

Welcome to the twentieth Bill Turner Trophy series. The competition continues to grow in this the eleventh year under the banner of the Northern NSW Schools Football Association.

This year we again have entries from Cairns down the eastern seaboard to Bendigo and as far west as Dubbo. The pilot competition in Western Australia is in recess.

Last year’s final was won by the favourites Westfields Sports but they were given hard games by both Hunter Sports and Illawarra Sports. However for me, the highlights also include the fine run by East Gosford’s St. Josephs College, who accounted for two sports high schools along the way as well as tiny Heritage College in Sydney’s west, who won their first ever two matches. The Final Series received good coverage on NBN news and SBS’s “The World Game.” We also thank the Newcastle Herald for their excellent coverage. Three and a half pages in “Juniors in Sport” on the Tuesday following the final was unbelievable.

Recently it has been pleasing to see graduates of our competition playing in all of the W-League teams except one.

The website continues to draw praise from players and supporters. Thanks to Lloyd Turner and Troy Roenneldt for their efforts in setting up and maintaining the site. We received 6400 visits in the four months it was running last season.

Enjoy the season. We again seek your continued moral and financial support this year and would like to invite you to attend, if possible, the final series on September 7th and 8th.
