WESTFIELDS Sports High football program is arguably one of the best around within the schools sector.

Comment by Greg Danvers – Bill Turner Cup Media Manager

Looking through the past winners of the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy, up-and-coming players in the A-League and W-League along with the national team programs there are plenty of names that have been students at Westfields.

At this year’s finals series there was plenty of talent to watch – from all six schools and eight teams – stars of the future were on display.

The quality of the football was there to be witnessed by all that ventured to ‘Wembley Stadium’ – Jack McLaughlin Field for the ‘FA Cup’ – Northern NSW Schools Soccer’s Bill Turner Cup.

One young man that took my eye was Westfields’ Amadou Keita who demonstrated many football qualities that bely his tender age.

Amadou Keita (r) in the Bill Turner Cup final

Amadou is in year 8 but his football ability is by far a long way ahead of that.

Is it the coaching he receives? Is it his upbringing? Is it a natural gift? Is it hard work on his behalf?

Yes would have to be the answer to all four questions.

Amadou arrived in Australia as a refugee of Guinea in West Africa about five years ago and is waiting on Australian citizenship – I say grant it now. He would not look out of place in Australian colours in a national youth team. Nor would he look out of place in an A-League club’s colours either.

Click on the link to hear Amadou Keita story.

The interview was conducted on the final day of the Bill Turner Cup finals series.

In a footnote to all our valued visitors to the Bill Turner Soccer website – thank you for supporting a great event.

Over the next 12 months the site will be tweaked for your enjoyment.

Regards

Greg Danvers

Westfield Sports High School retained their 2010 title with a hard fought win over 1994 champions Patrician Brothers, Blacktown, who were competing in the final for only the second time.
Blacktown were by far the more impressive team in the first half and had the usually strong Westfield defence under pressure. As early as the sixth minute they caused confusion when a corner kick was brilliantly headed by tall striker Natnaeil Koko straight at goalkeeper Jayden Diacono.
Details

Final: Westfields Sports 3 (Amadou Keita 50m, Jordan Nadalin 58M, Aaron D’Mello 60+m) bt Patrician Brothers Blacktown 1 (Natnoeil Koko 14m).

Match report by Ray Sandell.

Westfield Sports High School retained their title with a hard fought win over 1994 champions Patrician Brothers, Blacktown, who were competing in the final for only the second time.
Blacktown were by far the more impressive team in the first half and had the usually strong Westfield defence under pressure. As early as the sixth minute they caused confusion when a corner kick was brilliantly headed by tall striker Natnaeil Koko straight at goalkeeper Jayden Diacono.
Blacktown continued their onslaught and on a number of occasions Diacono was forced to make telling saves from the opposition attack.
It was no surprise when, in the 14th minute, Blacktown scored. Joshua Currie picked up a loose ball on the goal line and cooly chipped in to the Westfield goalmouth for Koko to jump high to head the ball into the net.
Westfield were limited to a few attacks that were always cut out by a busy Blacktown defence and at half time the score was unaltered.
The second half commenced with an immediate change in the Westfield attitude and effort. They invaded the Blacktown goal, but the defence stayed strong and Blacktown were reluctant to give up the single goal advantage.
Blacktown’s efforts started to show and they became noticeably slower in their reactions. Westfield noticed this and “upped the ante” and the ball never seemed to leave the Blacktown half.
With ten minutes remaining, the ball was played into the Blacktown penalty area and pushed out, only to see a quickly advancing Amadour Kieta volley the ball into the top of the Blacktown net for the equaliser.
Blacktown never really recovered from this disappointment and it was only a matter of time before the inevitable happened.
With two minutes remaining, the ball came in to the Blacktown goal mouth from the right hand side. Diacono came out to gather but was beaten by a lightning quick Jordan Nadalin who side footed the ball past him for Westfield’s second goal.
Two minutes later the result was confirmed when Evan Patramanis fired a vicious shot from 15 metres that left Diacono clutching thin air. 3-1!
The final whistle was blown, and Westfield had retained the championship, but not before Blacktown had given them one hell of a shock!
Well done to both teams for a hard fought and entertaining game that concluded a wonderful 2011 Bill Turner Cup season!

Hunter Sports High beat Westfields Sports High 2-1 to claim the 2011 and 21st Bill Turner Trophy.

Hunter’s Jemma House and Shana Stopp were proving much too quick down their respective wings and it was no surprise when Hunter opened the scoring in the tenth minute. Stopp collected a loose ball in midfield and sped away to slide a perfectly weighted shot past the advancing Westfield goalkeeper Jessica Urquhart.

Details

Final: Hunter Sports High 2 (Shana Stopp 10m, Elodie Dagg 74m penalty in golden-goal extra-time) bt Westfields Sports 1 (Amy Harrison 54m).

Third place play-off: Cavendish Road 4 (Salena Catchpole 3m, Emily Vievers 8m, Teagan Thompson 13m, own goal 17m) bt Daramalan College 1 (Georgia Stewart 29m).

Star Player Award: Ayesha Norrie – Cavendish Road, Brisbane

Hear what Hunter’s coach Ashley Wilson had to say.

Match report by Ray Sandell

The first half was dominated by Hunter Sports High who were much faster to the ball than a sluggish looking Westfields.

Hunter continued to put pressure on the Wesfield defence but could not add to their score before half time.

As often happens, fortunes completely changed in the second half with Westfield taking the ascendency and the Hunter goal immediately under pressure. Hunter suffered a tragic loss when their star defender, Isabel Lauina, suffered an ankle injury and had to leave the field and took no further part in the match.

Six minutes before full time Westfield were awarded a penalty kick and Amy Harrison made no mistake with the kick to equalise.

Full time arrived with no further addition to the score and the match went into extra time.

The game became very frantic with both teams endeavouring to get that magic “golden goal”. Five minutes into the first half Hunter’s Shana Stopp missed a golden opportunity to score but missed from five metres out. She repeated the effort with one minute to go to halftime.

Immediately from the goal kick, a penalty kick were awarded to Hunter for handball. Up stepped Elodie Dagg to take the kick and made no mistake to give Hunter the Bill Turner Trophy and end Westfield’s run of three consecutive final wins, and also ended their record of never having been beaten in nine Grand Finals!

Marian’s Nicholas Harrison made several first half raids into Cavendish Road’s penalty area but was not able to provide the knock-out strike.

The score was 0-0 at half time with Cavendish Road finding the net twice, firstly through Aleksa Krkeljas and then Aaron Tucker, in the second to claim third place in the Bill Turner Cup.

A great effort by both teams to contest the 33rd finals series of the coveted Bill Turner Cup.

Bill Turner Third Place Play-off by Ray Sandell

Cavendish Road took two minutes to open the scoring in the Trophy Play-Off game with a goal by Salena Catchpole, and proceeded to add another three by the fifteenth minute with Emily Veivers and Teagan Thompson the scorers followed by an unfortunate own goal.

To their credit Daramalan College put these disappointments behind them and scored two minutes before half time with a goal by Georgia Stewart.

The second half was a much more even affair with Daramalan coming right back into the game but neither team was able to add to the score.

Westfields Sports High will play Patrician Brothers Blacktown in the 33rd final of the Bill Turner Cup at Jack McLaughlin Field at Edgeworth on Wednesday 7 September.

Westfields beat Brisbane’s Cavendish Road 2-1 on penalties, after the score was locked at nil-all at the conclusion of regulation and golden-goal extra-time, in the first semi-final.

Patrician Brothers Blacktown accounted for Griffith’s Marian Catholic College 4-3 in an enthralling second semi-final.

Westfields Sports High, the 2010 champions, are the most successful school in the Bill Turner Cup history contesting ten finals – winning six and runners-up in four.
Westfields won the Bill Turner Cup in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2010. Runners-up in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Westfields now have the opportunity to win a seventh Bill Turner Cup final while they also have the chance to win a third double after the girls beat Cavendish Road 1-0 in the Bill Turner Trophy in their semi-final.

The Bill Turner Cup and Trophy double has only been achieved three times previously, twice by Westfields (1995 and 2010), and Hunter Sports High in 2007.

Match Reports and Results: By Greg Danvers
Semi-finals played at Jack McLaughlin Field, Edgeworth on Tuesday 6 September, 2011

S/F 1: Westfields Sports High (NSW) 0 (2) bt Cavendish Road State High (QLD) 0 (1) on penalties.

Unfortunately penalties were required to separate these two quality sides. For 60-minutes of regulation and then 20 of golden-goal extra-time the nil-all stalemate could not be broken.

Both teams, with enterprising inter-play and passing, pressed their opposition looking for the deciding goal.

Under the Bill Turner Cup regulation, in extra-time, each team dropped off a player at each five-minute marker. This made for even more enterprising attack and desperate defence.

The last five minutes the tension on the sidelines reflected the desire of both teams to secure a winner. The coaches probably aged considerably given the mounting tension and expectation of a finals berth.

Westfields converted their first two penalties while Cavendish Road could only steer one past the Westfields custodian.

S/F2: Patrician Brothers Blacktown (NSW) 4 (Sebatian Ceza 5m, Joshua Currie 33m, 58m; Rory McGeown 51m) bt Marian Catholic College Griffith (NSW) 3 (Shaun Villata 17m, Joey Arena 26m, Jake Aramini 42m)

The second semi-final of the Bill Turner Cup was completely different from the first – a goal fest – seven in all.

Patrician Brothers of Blacktown took the lead in the fifth minute, Marian Catholic College of Griffith replied 20-minutes on to level the ledger at 1-all. Joey Arena gave Marian confidence to with left foot volley into the top corner of the net deep into the first half for a 2-1 advantage.

The vocal crowd that was on hand to witness the second half strapped themselves into their seats for four goals in the final 30-minutes.

Patrician Brothers levelled soon after the resumption, Marian replied to lead 3-2 but the Blacktown boys converted twice to book a final’s appearance with Westfields.

Westfields Sports High are the first team through to the Bill Turner Trophy for Girls final after a 1-0 win over Brisbane’s Cavendish Road State High.

Westfields will now contest their ninth Bill Turner Trophy final. The big question can they make now make it nine wins from nine finals and four consecutive victories.

Sydney’s west based sports high school have won the Bill Turner Trophy in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2008, 2009 and 2010. They have won the Bill Turner Trophy three consecutive times on two occasions (1999-2001 and 2008-2010) and this year could become the first school to win the title on four consecutive occasions.

Hunter Sports High will play Westfields in the Bill Turner Trophy final after a 2-0 win over Canberra’s Daramalan College.

Hunter Sports High had previously contested four Bill Turner Trophy finals – winning in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and runners-up in 2008.

Match Reports and Results:

Semi-finals played at Jack McLaughlin Field, Edgeworth on Tuesday 6 September, 2011

S/F 1: Westfields Sports High (NSW) 1 (Rhianna Pollicina 13m) bt Cavendish Road State High (QLD)
By Ray Sandell

The first half of the first girl’s semi final turned out to be a half where an effervescent Westfield Sports attack competed against a dour Cavendish Road defence.

Cavendish Road, however, had the first two early chances when on both occasions the Westfield goalkeeper Jessica Urquhart was cleverly lobbed, but the first shot was cleared off the goal line and the second hit the crossbar!

Westfield’s first chance came in the 15th minute when they attacked down the middle and the ball ended up with Rhianna Pollicina who shot from the edge of the penalty area. Pollicina threaded the ball under the diving body of Cavendish Road ‘keeper Sky Jensen.

Westfield continued to attack for the remainder of the first half but the halftime whistle came with no addition to the 1-0 scoreline.

The second half saw a revitalised Cavendish Road who took over the role of attackers but despite a number of goal scoring opportunities failed to find the elusive equaliser.

Westfield Sports was served well by Rhianna Polliciina and Lauren Featherstone, whilst Emily Dunn and Claire Urquhart-Watson starred for Cavendish Road.

S/F2: Hunter Sports High (NSW) 2 (Shana Stopp 43m, Jemma House 49m) bt Daramalan College (ACT) 0
By Ray Sandell

The second girl’s semi final followed the trend of the first game with one team dominating, that being Hunter Sports High, to such an extent that their goalkeeper, Ashley Sweetman, only touched the ball once in the first half!

On the few occasions that Daramalan College did get into the Hunter half they were thwarted by a dominant defence in which Isabel Lauina starred.

The second half saw Daramalan come back into the game and cause Hunter a few problems, but as then game progressed it was obvious that Daramalan were tiring, and Hunter took advantage attacking down the middle and the ball went to Shana Stopp who ran into the penalty area unmarked and side footed the ball past an advancing Daramalan goal keeper to open the scoring.

Seven minutes later Hunter put the result out of doubt when Jemma House steered the ball into the net following a corner kick.

For Hunter Sports High, Tulia Pallozzi and Shana Stopp had outstanding games up front whilst Dalamaran were well served by Lauren Keir and Lucy Doble.
