By Kerry Northcott – Byron Bay High
Armidale July 18, 2014: Byron Bay High defeated O’Connor Catholic College, Armidale 2-0 in the Bill Turner Cup round of 32 playoff to put the Bay boys through to the round of 16 for the first time in the school’s history.
Having previously beat Trinity Catholic College in a tough 2-1 win, the boys were determined to improve their game and make the long trip count.
Taking the field in near freezing conditions, Byron Bay went ahead early when Griffin Bambach launched a long-range shot from outside the area that flew over the keeper and dropped into the top corner.
Plenty of fast paced attacking play from the Byron boys kept the pressure up while the defense held rock solid to keep the oppositions chances to a minimum.
Sam Shepherd put the game beyond the opposition’s reach midway through the second half when he anticipated a defensive pass to the keeper, collecting the ball cleanly and showing some fine footwork to finish the opportunity.
Details: Byron Bay High 2 (Griffin Bambach, Sam Shepherd) defeated O’Connor Catholic College, Armidale 0.
