Interesting statistics leading into the 2012 Bill Turner Cup and Trophy Finals Series on September 4 and 5 in the City of Lake Macquarie at Jack McLaughlan Field, Park Street, Edgeworth.

Bill Turner Cup – Boys – Semi finalists

The Hills Sports (NSW) v Westfields Sports (NSW)

John Paul College (QLD) v Maribyrnong Secondary College (VIC)

The Bill Turner Cup was first played in 1979 where Belmont High School beat Whitebridge High School in the Bill Turner Cup final.

The 2012 version is the 34th time the Bill Turner Cup will be contested. The knock-out tournament, for high school teams aged 15 years and under started in the second term with over 400 entries.

Westfields Sports High, the 2011 champions, are the most successful school in the Bill Turner Cup history contesting 11 finals – winning seven and runners-up four times.

Westfields won the Bill Turner Cup in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2010 and 2011 and were runners-up in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

John Paul College has won the Bill Turner Cup twice, 2004 and 2005, in their only appearances in the finals series.

The Hills were victorious in 2006 in their second trip to Jack Mclaughlan Oval, venue for the finals series, after being runners-up in 2005 – to John Paul College.

Melbourne’s Maribyrnong College will make their debut in the finals series this year.

Bill Turner Trophy – Girls – Semi finalists

Hunter Sports (Northern NSW) v Westfields Sports (NSW)

The Bill Turner Trophy for Girls, then run under the Combined High Schools banner with support from NSW Soccer Federation, was first contested in 1991. Bass High School beat Colo High School in the final.

In 2000 Northern NSW Schools Soccer Association Incorporated was approached to take-over the administration of the Girls competition which became known as the Bill Turner Trophy.

The 2012 version of the Bill Turner Trophy will be the 22nd and commenced in the second term with over 350 contestants in the knock-out tournament for high school teams aged 15 years and under.

Westfields Sports High has contested nine finals and has been beaten once, last year by Hunter Sports High, in a final of the Bill Turner Trophy.

Westfields won the Bill Turner Trophy in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2008, 2009 and 2010. They have won the Bill Turner Trophy three consecutive times on two occasions (1999-2001 and 2008-2010).

Hunter Sports High has contested the Bill Turner Trophy on five occasions winning in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011 while they were runners-up in 2008.

The Hills have been to the Bill Turner Trophy finals series twice, both times being runners-up, in 2005 and 2007.

Palm Beach Currumbin make the Bill Turner Trophy finals series debut on September 4.

The Bill Turner Cup and Trophy double has been won three times – Westfields Sports in 1995 and 2010 with Hunter Sports winning both titles in 2007.

This year there are six schools in the eight team Bill Turner Cup and Trophy finals series with The Hills and Westfields contesting both.
