Date Posted: 30 August 2013

School soccer teams from around Australia will descend on Jack McLaughlan Field in Edgeworth next week for the 35th Bill Turner Cup and Trophy finals.

Lake Macquarie City Council will host a civic reception at 11am next Tuesday, 3 September, at Park Road, Speers Point to welcome the competing teams, which will contest the Cup and Trophy on that day and the next.

Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Cr Jodie Harrison, said this annual event is a local favourite which showcases the talent of young soccer players 15 years and under from Queensland, NSW, the ACT and Victoria. This year, Lake Macquarie’s Hunter Sports High School will compete for the Bill Turner Trophy in the female division.

“The Bill Turner Cup and Trophy promote all the positive attributes of team sport and create opportunities for social interaction across borders,” Cr Harrison said.

“We are so proud that this knockout competition is held in Lake Macquarie every year thanks to the dedication of the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy Executive Committee, sponsors and its patron, Bill Turner, who sadly passed away aged 83 in February. Bill’s dedication to school and youth soccer will always be fondly remembered.”

Cr Harrison said spectators can watch the matches on Tuesday from 2pm, and the final and third-place playoff matches on Wednesday from 2.45pm.
