Bill Turner CupThird place play-off

WESTFIELDS SPORTS NSW 1 (Marvin Potrus 43m) beat JOHN PAUL COLLEGE QLD 0. At Jack McLaughlan Field, Edgeworth on 5 September.
Without the pressure of a grand final weighing on their minds both teams adopted a somewhat carefree approach to the Bill Turner Cup (for boys) third place play-off in warm but at times blustery conditions at Jack McLaughlan Field.
The first half was scoreless but not void of action, classy ball movement and fluent play.
The second half was much the same but intensity had risen a few levels with physicality playing a part in proceedings as the teams tried to deliver the telling blow and find the elusive netting of the goals.
A 43rd minute free kick from Westfields’ number-10 – Martin Lo – found a central Marvin Potrus who duly rose above the John Paul defenders to head home to the right of their custodian Seung Youn.

BILL TURNER TROPHY THIRD PLACE PLAY OFF
PALM BEACH-CURRUMBIN V HUNTER SPORTS HIGH

Hunter dominated the first part of this match to such an extent that it was thirteen minutes before their goalkeeper, Danielle Redding, touched the ball and that was a pass back by one of her own defenders!.
They had numerous shots on goal that went wide or high, or straight to Amber Dilley in the Palm Beach goal.

Despite being overwhelmed, the Palm Beach defence kept the Hunter attack at bay and at half time the score was 0-0!

The second half started much more evenly and Palm Beach had obviously been told to lift their game during the half time break. Nine minutes into the second half Katherine Ploog made a fast break from the halfway line and sped towards the Hunter goal.  As goalie Redding came out she cooly shot across the goal into the far side of the net to give Palm Beach the lead.

Five minutes from full time Hunter’s Shana Stopp had an excellent opportunity to equalise when she ran into the penalty area with the ball at her feet but failed to beat Amber Dilley in the Palm Beach goal. Hunter continued to put the Palm Beach goal under pressure but as in the first half they defended well and kept their more fancied opponents at bay to take third position in the Bill Turner trophy competition.
